How to Pick a Good Christmas Gift

Christmas is a time of the year dedicated to giving. Because of this, Christmas time requires a great deal of shopping around for a decent gift to give to friends and loved ones. While this may seem like a relatively easy venture, the truth is that sometimes selecting a proper gift can prove difficult. Many times, people will rack their brains trying to figure out what type of gift would the person for whom the gift was intended be appreciative of.

The gift should always match the person for whom the gift is intended. The person’s likes and dislikes should be taken into consideration so as to provide the person with a gift that is welcome and thoughtful. If someone were a huge fan of model airplane kits, then purchasing a model kit would be wise. (Perhaps it would be even wiser to purchase a model kit of a boat or a car so as to avoid providing a gift the person may already own, but since it is still a model kit it is within the general ballpark) It makes no sense to purchase a gift that totally does not fit the individual. If the person is not an avid reader, then purchasing the person a book or a subscription to a magazine will not be the best gift idea, yet people make these types of blunders often. Another blunder is trying to sneak a “generic” present into the equation.

A generic present is a present that is dull, bland and lifeless. There is nothing that typifies a blasé gift example than the age-old cliché of the little kid who receives a pair of socks for Christmas. The idea behind giving the child a pair of socks is that he needs them and they are also an easy gift to purchase that does not require a lot of shopping around. The reason the cliché includes a frowning and disappointed little kid is because the kid can see through such a transparent gift. It really isn’t welcome and it is an obvious attempt to purchase a gift without actually having to go out and purchase a gift. If you find yourself slipping into this, shift gears and start putting some thoughtfulness back into your selection.

If there ever were a best way to figure out which gift to purchase someone, it would be to ask him or her. Now, asking the person what they would like for Christmas essentially telegraphs the fact that whatever their answer is will be the gift. This is no fun at all because it takes all the guessing and speculation out of getting a gift. It is also a classic way someone might try and pawn off an expensive gift suggestion onto you!

Instead, ask the person about things they wish they could purchase for leisure activities or for the home and ask them long in advance of Christmas so that there is no suspicion that you are fishing for a gift idea. Again, a great deal of the fun in exchanging gifts derives from the guessing game that it encompasses so do not do anything that would undermine it.
